B2B Technologies, today announced that the firm has successfully migrated Georgia State University (GSU), a major urban research university, to the new Microsoft Office 365 Exchange platform. As one of the first higher education institutions in North America to migrate to Microsoft's recently released cloud email platform, GSU’s more than 5,000 faculty, staff and part-time employees now have access to a 25-gigabyte (GB) email account, and Web-based access to email, calendars, and contacts from their desktops, laptops, and mobile devices.
“B2B Technologies is proud to be among a select group, one of the very first Microsoft Cloud Accelerate Partners to migrate clients to Office 365,” said Frank Fuerst, co-founder and president of B2B Technologies. “We are finding strong interest in the Microsoft Office 365 cloud services, as many forward-thinking educational institutions like Georgia State University are looking at the cost benefits that can be realized from the cloud platform, such as eliminating servers, storage, and off-site back-up resources."
GSU’s legacy email system no longer provided faculty and staff with the necessary functionality; and a cost/benefit analysis demonstrated the superiority of moving to a cloud-based email platform versus an on-premise solution. B2B Technologies provided a two-part implementation engagement, first with the initial envisioning, planning and design and second, managing the transition from GSU’s on-premise legacy email system to Exchange Online.
Microsoft Exchange Online provides GSU employees with a broad range of functionality, including:
• A 25-gigabyte (GB) mailbox with the ability to send email messages of up to 25 megabytes (MB);
• Access to email, calendar, contacts, notes and tasks from nearly any Web browser across devices, the Web and desktop;
• Ability to easily schedule meetings by sharing calendars with colleagues and viewing them side-by-side to check availability and suggest meeting times;
• Point of presence functionality with instant messaging;
• Compatibility with free-hosted Microsoft Live[.]edu email solution used by students;
• Encryption and processes and controls for International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR), Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and HIPAA compliance.
“The deployment engagement itself was extremely fast-paced. We worked very closely with Microsoft to ensure that shortly after Microsoft Office 365 was released on June 28, 2011, we were able to migrate more than 5,000 GSU faculty and staff to Exchange over the July 4th weekend,” said Tonya Smith, Consulting Director at B2B Technologies. “The quick migration meant that when employees came in after the holiday weekend their messages were waiting, with no loss of data, and disruption was minimized.”
