Brooklyn, NY, United States, 2011/10/05 - First ever award given to a kosher supervisor-$1,000 award as "Mashgiach of the Year," given to Gedalya Silverstein of Atlanta, GA, by Kashrus Magazine, Brooklyn, NY, the periodical for the kosher consumer - KashrusMagazine.com.
KASHRUS Magazine, the Brooklyn-based periodical for the kosher consumer, bestowed on Gedalya Silverstein of Atlanta, GA, the title of “Mashgiach (kosher supervisor) of the Year” and presented him with $1,000. Mr. Silverstein, who has worked for the Atlanta Kashruth Commission (the “AKC”) since 1998, was chosen from among the nominees of the 1,127 kosher agencies worldwide.
The kosher supervisor is the vital link in the chain to ensure that food is actually kosher. The kosher supervisor is the on-site person in charge of administering kosher in a particular restaurant or production facility. Kosher food is sought after by Jewish/Moslem/Seventh Day Adventists, as well as vegetarians and those allergic to specific foods and ingredients. For a long time the “unsung heroes,” kosher supervisors, with the granting of this award, will receive their due honor.
The sponsors of the “Mashgiach of the Year” award included A&B Famous Gefilte Fish, Main Menu freezer-to-oven products, Paskesz Candy, koshervitamins.com (the largest online Kosher Vitamins superstore), Estihana Restaurant in Brooklyn, and Chai-Ko-Tapas Restaurant in Teaneck, NJ. These companies were appreciative of the service which their own kosher supervisors have been providing to them.
“Choosing one kosher supervisor from among so many entries,” said Rabbi Yosef Wikler, editor of KASHRUS Magazine,“was a real challenge, but we are confident that Gedalya represents the finest qualities which kosher supervisors possess: responsibility, dedication, quick thinking, a positive attitude, and good interpersonal skills. Being a kosher supervisor is a hard job, if you do it right; that’s why these men are truly our very finest.”
When interviewed, Gedalya commented,“Sometimes, the kosher supervisor has to make an on-the-spot decision. When there is time, a call should be made to the rabbinical administrator, but when you are alone, and the pressure builds up, you have to make that judgment call.”
