Managed hosting provider EveryCity is supporting OpenIndiana, an open source enterprise operating system derived from OpenSolaris. Today, just over a year after its launch, the OpenIndiana project announces the next development release. OpenIndiana build 151a is now available for 32 and 64-bit x86 systems.

The OpenIndiana project was created on September 14th, 2010, spearheaded by the CEO of EveryCity, Alasdair Lumsden, and EveryCity have committed to providing sponsorship by way of bandwidth and hosting capacity on their cloud platform, relieving one of the greatest cost burdens for the project, which was created to fill the gap left by the withdrawal of OpenSolaris from the market earlier last year.

“OpenIndiana's latest release is a significant milestone for the project, and represents a year of intensive hard work by our developers. OpenIndiana is now powered at its core by illumos, delivering with it significant enhancements such as KVM, the Kernel Mode Virtualisation software” (Alasdair Lumsden, CEO of EveryCity and OpenIndiana project lead).

The latest build brings a wide variety of enhancements and new features, including a wealth of new software via the Spec Files Extra project (SFE). This includes Mplayer, VLC, FFMpeg, Postgres 9.0, mpd, Blender, Inkscape and others.

This release is also the foundation for the forthcoming first stable release of OpenIndiana, which will feature regular security and bug fixes provided free of charge.

About EveryCity

Established in January 2006, EveryCity’s mission is simple – to deliver the very best hosting possible. EveryCity's outstanding and bespoke approach to service is what differentiates the company from competitors. To achieve that and to be more agile and responsive to clients’ needs, EveryCity (everycity.co.uk) has moved away from the fixed service model prevalent in the industry, towards the delivery of flexible and adaptable solutions.

EveryCity is able to provide dedicated hosting, cloud hosting (with public and private clouds available) and ‘hybrid’ hosting (a combination of dedicated and cloud). However, the primary focus is to deliver Windows, Linux and Solaris hosting solutions via the EveryCity on demand, scalable platform. This platform has been engineered from the ground up to deliver outstanding performance, scalability and reliability for clients. The infrastructure is enterprise class, employs the latest technologies and is fully redundant with no single point of failure.

About OpenIndiana

OpenIndiana is a robust enterprise operating system, based on the illumos kernel. It is open source, free to use, community developed, and suitable for servers and desktops. It was launched on September 14th, 2010 and built by community developers.
