GDF SUEZ and IDB signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the annual Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) meeting to collaborate closely on socially sustainable projects for energy access and the environment. The collaboration will focus in particular on supporting social entrepreneurial projects aiming at providing sustainable energy access to disadvantaged populations. It is part of GDF SUEZ’ corporate social responsibility program,“GDF SUEZ Rassembleurs d’Energies.”
That program is aimed at promoting economic and social development of isolated regions and at reducing energy insecurity worldwide. It is organized around 3 initiatives: skills sponsorship and technical assistance to entrepreneurs, donations, and equity investments, which can be implemented either separately or in a combined way. The Group is already active and well committed in such projects through its internal NGOs, Energy Assistance, Codegaz and Aquassistance. The ambition of GDF SUEZ, through "GDF SUEZ Rassembleurs d’Energies", is to sponsor up to 8 significant projects with high social impact by 2013.
This program was awarded solidarity assent by the French administration in August 2011, making it eligible to be included in solidarity funds.
The IDB Group, the main development institution in Latin America and the Caribbean, with numerous ongoing initiatives in support of sustainable energy, energy access and small entrepreneurs, will bring its own extensive expertise and resources to the partnership. The collaboration will include, among other things, the identification and joint review of project opportunities, the co-financing of specific projects or programs, and joint support to the development of entrepreneurial energy-access business models.
The IDB, through its Office of Outreach and Partnerships (ORP), facilitated the creation of this partnership, which will mobilize additional financial and non-financial resources for the Bank to increase the support for its member countries.
