GE Healthcare, a unit of General Electric Company (NYSE:GE), announced the sale of the 100th Discovery* NM/CT 670, a hybrid imaging platform designed to help facilitate workflow efficiency, dose management, and excellent image quality. After a successful European and United States launch, the system has been selected by 100 sites around the world, including the most recent sale in the U.S. at the Boston Medical Center.

At Boston Medical Center, the opportunities to manage radiation exposure and to combine high quality CT with SPECT imaging, and our positive experience with a Discovery PET/CT scanner were major factors in selecting GE,” said Gustavo Mercier, MD, PhD Chief, Molecular Imaging and Nuclear Medicine, BMC, Assistant Professor of Radiology, BUSM. “We were interested in the opportunities that GE's SPECT/CT offers in musculoskeletal, cardiac, neuroendocrine, and infection imaging, as well as advanced dose management on the BrightSpeed* Elite CT embedded in the Discovery NM/CT 670. This system together with the XFL and Xeleris* Suite workstations integrated into our GE PACs system will expand our Molecular Imaging Service, a service in which we routinely combine high quality CT and PET imaging to support our physicians and their patients.”

The Discovery NM/CT 670 system combines a newly designed SPECT gantry for exceptional positional flexibility and GE Healthcare’s latest advancements in Nuclear Medicine detectors with GE Healthcare’s BrightSpeed Elite 16 slice CT. The Discovery NM/CT 670 has the capability to shorten acquisition times and enable more convenient patient scheduling in comparison to separate, conventional SPECT and CT exams and offers excellent dose management capabilities

“We have a long history of innovation in Nuclear Medicine, including introducing the world’s first SPECT/CT more than 10 years ago,” said Nathan Hermony, general manager of GE Healthcare’s Nuclear Medicine business. “With the Discovery NM/CT 670, we are providing clinicians the ability to explore new capabilities while continuing to perform advanced hybrid and standalone CT procedures. By using GE Healthcare’s latest in SPECT and CT technology, clinicians and researchers are empowered to explore new dimensions of disease and provide exceptional treatment and monitoring of the patient.”

Focusing on improving the patient experience, the system can reduce scan time dramatically. Bone imaging protocols, including planar whole body, 3D SPECT and CT attenuation correction/localization, are among the most frequently performed Nuclear Medicine procedures. With conventional nuclear hybrid imaging, such a bone imaging protocol can take up to 35 minutes. With the Discovery NM/CT 670, the imaging time can be reduced to as little as 16 minutes. A shorter, more comfortable scan helps reduce patient motion, thereby contributing to the ability to obtain excellent image quality.

The Discovery NM/CT 670 platform incorporates flexible and proven workflow technology advancements with a modular gantry, designed to embrace tomorrow’s technology today. The BrightSpeed Elite, providing proven multi-slice CT performance, completes the advanced system.
