The Triangle’s innovative leader in the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders, Parkway SleepHealth Centers, recently hosted a “dinner and learn” for area physicians and their guests to review developments in sleep apnea. This potentially dangerous disorder occurs when breathing is interrupted during sleep, sometimes hundreds of times, depriving an individual’s brain and body of much-needed oxygen.
Attendees at the relaxed, informative session held at Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Cary heard from Parkway’s in-house Medical Director, Khaleel Ahmed, MD, DABSM and members of his credentialed medical staff on emerging technologies and approaches to treatment.
“Medical professionals are excited about our ability to track compliance and then effectively follow up by using the latest CPAP machines to review treatment efficiency on a nightly basis,” Brent Brandow, Parkway physician liaison, said.
CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure, is one form of treatment prescribed to Parkway patients upon completion of an in-depth, detailed sleep study. Utilizing a proven effective, compassionate care model for correctly identifying health threats such as obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy and insomnia, Parkway gives each new patient a comprehensive, face-to-face evaluation with Dr. Ahmed, reviewing the individual’s sleep history and performing a non-intrusive medical examination.
“A great day starts with a good night sleep. We believe in comprehensive evaluation, management and follow up for full spectrum of sleep disorders, sleep apnea being the most common,” Dr. Ahmed said.
Parkway SleepHealth Centers also specializes in evaluation and treatment of narcolepsy, insomnia and circadian rhythm disorders in adults and children, Dr. Ahmed explained, using cutting edge technologies like Actigraphy and Neurofeedback in evaluation and management of patients.
“Sleep disorders can affect quality of life on a day to day basis and have serious health consequences on a long term basis,” he added.
Dr. Ahmed and his fellow Parkway MDs -- including a neurologist and sleep specialist, a pediatrician and pediatric sleep specialist, and a supervising physician, in addition to ten registered polysomnographic technologists -- work with referring physicians to correctly identify individual patient problems and prescribe corrective treatment.
“We have strong relationships with many area physicians and work to make the referral process quick and painless for each patient, as well as the referring physician’s staff,” Brent Brandow explained.
