The green zone was prevalent today as the Bulls held the markets firmly through out the session. For a Monday, trading action proved fair with modest trading volume and mostly tight trading ranges. At the closing bell, the DOW (Dow Jones Industrial Average) was with reach of the 12,000 mark by less than 20 points to close the day at 11980.60 with a gain of just over 19 ¼ points; the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) tacked on almost 47 points on the day; the NASDAQ moved higher by just over 6 ½ points; the S&P 500 moved higher by almost 3 ½ points and the RUSSELL 2000 gained almost 7 points on the day. The FTSE All-World Index ex-US (top Large/Mid Cap aggregate from over 2,700 stocks from the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (GEIS) which covers 90% of the worlds investable market capitalization) moved higher by 0.83 points and the FTSE RAFI 1000 moved higher by almost 15 points on the day.
Economic data released for the day:
New York Empire State Index: A monthly survey of manufacturers, in a variety of industries located in the state of New York conducted by the New York Fed. General Business Conditions Index came in at 22.9 compared to consensus of 11.0.
On the commodities markets, the trend was positive across the board again today: Light crude rose $1.37 to close at $59.94 a barrel; Brent Crude rose by $0.98 to close at $61.66 a barrel; Heating Oil moved higher on the session by $0.04 to close at $1.80 a gallon; Natural Gas ended the day higher at $8.31 per million BTU with a gain of $0.46 and Unleaded Gas picked up $0.02 to close at $1.49 a gallon.
Metals ended the session with nice gains across the board: Gold climbed by $5.80 to close at $598.50 an ounce; Silver moved higher by $0.23 to close at $11.91 an ounce; Platinum rallied another $8.00 to close at $1,091.30 an ounce and Copper ended the day higher by $0.17 to close at $3.58 per pound.
On the Livestock and Meat markets, the trend was mixed on the session: Lean Hogs moved lower by 0.25 to close at 60.80; Pork Bellies closed lower by 1.33 to end the day at 88.63; Live Cattle moved lower by 0.50 to end the day at 87.43 and Feeder Cattle rose by 0.85 to close at 104.40.
Bonds showed modest gains across the board today: 2 year Bond closed higher by 1/32 at 99 18/32; 5 year bond closed higher by 4/32 at 98 30/32; 10 year bond moved higher by 5/32 to end the day at 100 23/32 and the 30 year bond closed higher by 10/32 at 93 19/32.
The end of day results for the CBOT (Chicago Board of Trade) which is comprised of the total Exchange Volume for Futures and Options (EVFO) including Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange ended the day at 3,632,828. Open Interest for Futures rose by 92,998 to close at 8,758,753 and the Open Interest for Options moved higher by 145,136 to close at 7,339,145 for a total Open Interest of 16,097,898 for a total gain on the day by 238,134. The mini Dow ended the session with a gain of 15 to close at 12035. The total Dow Exchange Volume for the day came in at 74,085 which are comprised of Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange. NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) movers for the day: Jlg Industries Incorporated (JLG) rallied by 32.82% for an increase on the day of 6.81 points; Greenbrier Companies Incorporated (GBX) gained 2.88 points on the day for a rise of 9.22%; Southwestern Energy Company (SWN) climbed 8.93% to tack on 2.71 points; Terex Corporation (TEX) climbed 4.04 points or 7.86%; Eaton Corporation (ETN) moved higher by 5.25 points for a gain on the day of 7.47%; CP HOLDRs (HCH) climbed higher by 5.49 points to rise by 5.55%; Intercontinental Exchange Incorporated (ICE) fell sharply by 5.67 points for a loss on the day of 6.83% and Oshkosh Truck Corporation (OSK) fell by 3.05 points for a loss on the day of 5.49%.
On the NASDAQ today, advancers came in at 1,948; decliners totaled 1,091; unchanged came in at 154; new highs came in at 222 and new lows came in at 13. Gainers and losers for the day on the NASDAQ: Open Solutions Incorporated (OPEN) rallied by 24.04% for a gain on the day of 7.28 points; Medtox Scientific Incorporated (MTOX) moved higher by 2.05 points for a gain on the day in the amount of 22.78%; Security With Advanced Technology Incorporated (SWAT) gained 1.16 points on the day for a rise higher of 19.86%; Omrix Biopharmaceuticals Incorporated (OMRI) fell by 14.29% for a loss on the day of 2.91 points and Mannatech Incorporated (MTEX) shed 2.45 points for a loss on the day of 12.83%.
