It seems that not everyone in Australia shares in the country's goal of addressing the skills shortage through bringing in skilled migrants. At least one person is not in favor, a fact that Immigration Senator Amanda Vanstone doesn't find appropriate, considering it is coming from a national leader.

Senator Vanstone said Mr Beazley's attack on foreign workers coming to Australia was not that of a national leader. Opposition leader Kim Beazley is known for his staunch disagreement with easing up Australian immigration for "foreign workers" just to solve the country's chronic skills shortage. For Mr. Beazley, the introduction of overseas workers undermine and displace Australian citizens from their jobs.

Each year, the skilled migration scheme, thanks to the simplified Australian visa system attracts more than 60,000 permanent and temporary skilled migrants. This healthy exodus, according to Senator Vanstone, is a vital element of Australia's sustained economic growth— record unemployment and jobs growth and record workforce participation. She quotes Mr. Beazleys's point, saying "(Australian parents) are correct when they fear the humiliation of their children, as they find themselves dispensed with as apprentices, as foreigners are brought into this country, prepared to work for virtually nothing.”

What she doesn't approve though is him calling temporary skilled migrants "foreign workers" ("foreign" in Australia has become a disparaging word for labour) as well as the racism, that is, Beazley's distinction between European and Asian "foreign workers".

"He doesn't intend you to think of Bristol, Blackpool and Birmingham. He wants you to worry about people coming from Bombay, Beijing and, for that matter, Bangladesh and every other country where there are 'low wages'," said the Senator.

Despite these points of debates, Australian visa application is still at its ongoing peak, what with Senator Vanstone in full support of skilled migrants from all over the world.
