Gérard Mestrallet, Chairman and CEO of GDF SUEZ, hosted yesterday Mr He Guoqiang, a member of the standing committee of the Politbureau of the Chinese communist party, and Mr Kong Quan, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to France, at the SITA waste-to-energy recovery unit in Créteil.
This unit treated more than 244 500 tons of waste in 2010. 98% of the waste is valorized among others for electricity or heating representing as much as one third of the heating needs of the city of Créteil in winter or 100% of hot water needs in summer. This unit avoids as much as 52 000 tons of CO2 every year.
This is the only visit to an industrial site planned during Mr He Guoqiang’s trip to France.
It illustrates both the priority placed on environmental issues in China’s 12th five-year plan and the expertise and know-how of GDF SUEZ through its subsidiary SUEZ ENVIRONEMMENT in waste treatment and implementation of the circular economy.
On the occasion of this visit, Gérard Mestrallet, Chairman and CEO of GDF SUEZ, said: “GDF SUEZ is a longstanding partner of China, with a historical presence of more than 30 years in the environment, and more recently in energy. I place special importance on maintaining and expanding the cooperation that our Group has undertaken with this great country. The skills and the businesses of GDF SUEZ correspond precisely to the concerns of the Chinese authorities and their interest in environmental issues, energy efficiency, and the green economy, which are at the heart of the policies being implemented in China.”
GDF SUEZ in China, a leading industrial player
GDF SUEZ has been present in China for more than thirty years and has solid positions in the sectors of the environment, energy and services in continental China, Hong Kong and Macao.
SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT has had a presence in China in the water sector through its subsidiary Sino-French Holding, a 50/50 joint venture with Hong Kong Group New World, a GDF SUEZ’s partner for over 20 years. SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT, through its subsidiary Sino French Water, provides today drinking water and water treatment to 19 Chinese cities (Chongqing, Qingdao, Sanya, Tanggu, Shanghai, Macao, etc.), amounting to serving an equivalent of more than 14 million people.
The Group is today a leading player in China in sludge and waste treatment sectors. It is also present in energy production through its equity interests in power plants in Macao and Zhenjiang, northwest of Shanghai.
In energy services, in September 2009 GDF SUEZ signed an agreement with the municipality of Chongqing to design, build and operate urban heating and cooling networks in that metropolitan area, one of the world’s largest municipalities, with more than 30 million inhabitants. In May 2011, GDF SUEZ signed a partnership agreement with Tianjin Innovative Finance Co. Ltd (TIFI) to create two companies devoted to air conditioning services for its new financial center located in the Yujiapu district, incorporating energy efficiency and environmental initiatives.
In October 2010, GDF SUEZ signed a contract with CNOOC to sell a total of approximately 2.6 million tons of LNG, starting in 2013 and extending over a period of four years.
