Phelps marks his 26th Birthday this year and is considered a likely contender for the 2012 London games. The sportsman who has been called ‘the greatest Olympian of all time” by former world record holder Mark Spitz, broke his first world record as a 15 year old.
The swimmer, who has won the World Swimmer of the Year award an unprecedented 6 times, has worked with Omega watches since his second Olympics appearance in 2004. Phelps had been the youngest swimmer to make the US national team when he qualified for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
He currently wears an Omega watches Seamaster Planet Ocean, a watch uniquely suited to the needs of a water-bound professional athlete. The luxurious timepiece features an Omega watches 2500 Calibre movement. This self-winding chronograph movement which has a co-axial escarpment at its core allowing the watch to be both accurate and maintain a 48 hour power reserve.
Alongside traditional features found on all the company’s timepieces such as scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass, there are other features specific to the model, such as a helium escape valve that allows the wear to work in the depths of the ocean as low as 600 metres, far below the range of swimmers or even free divers. It also features a self locking screw down crown to prevent water ingress.
Phelps has been continuing to compete in competitive swimming in a bid to beat his 8 gold medals that he gained at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and added to his 6 gold’s in the 2004 games in Athens.
The sportsman has set a number of world records the first in 2001 when he became the youngest ever record holder in the 200 metre butterfly. At the 2008 Olympics Phelps won his eighth gold medal in the men’s 4×100 m medley relay, setting a new world record for the team in the event with a time of 3 minutes and 29.34 seconds.
