Attorney Matthew Sharp is being named Nevada’s 2011 Trial Lawyer of the Year by the Nevada Justice Association (NJA) this week. The NJA is a non-profit consumer rights organization dedicated to improving the civil justice system. It will recognize Sharp at its annual gala Tuesday, June 28, in Reno and Thursday, June 30, in Las Vegas.
Sharp is a fifth-generation Nevadan and has been practicing law since 1992. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Nevada, Reno and received his law degree from the University of Arizona.
“When there is work to be done, Matthew Sharp is the first lawyer to roll up his sleeves and begin the tasks at hand,” said Gerald Gillock, an attorney who nominated Sharp for the award along with attorney Neil Galatz. “That is true whether he is dealing with legislative reform, trial preparation, appellant briefing or any other aspect of the legal profession that protects and furthers the rights of consumers and other injured persons.”
A long-standing member of the NJA, Sharp has served the organization as president twice and continues to serve as an NJA governor and as co-chair of the Legislative Steering Committee.
In addition to his recognition as Trial Lawyer of the Year, Sharp was named a “Mountain States Super Lawyer” in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and a “Nevada Super Lawyer” in 2008.
“Matt is a champion of consumers’ rights, directing his efforts toward making sure that the insurance industry is held accountable for their obligations to policy holders and the people who are injured as a result of negligence,” said Gillock. “His decorum in the courtroom has been applauded by the judiciary. He has been successful over the years in obtaining significant verdicts in his cases and he is always willing to assist counsel.”
