FLIR Systems, Inc., announced today the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) has awarded the Company a $1.1 million contract for Phase II of a multi-year, multi-phase research and development contract to develop a mobile, ruggedized stand-off radiation detection system with identification capabilities.
The goal of this new system is to enable detection of radioactive sources at stand-off distances. Work under this contract will be performed out of the FLIR facilities located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and Solingen, Germany.
“FLIR has more than 20 years of experience developing radiation detection and identification devices and manufactures the world leading handheld radio-isotope identifier, the identiFINDER®,” said William A. Sundermeier, president of FLIR Detection and Protection. “The resulting system will provide a stand-off solution to the challenge of locating and identifying radioactive sources in field environments such as ports, maritime environments, and battlefields.”
