This week at The Cable Show, Rovi Corporation unveiled the Rovi TotalGuide Application for Set-top Boxes (STBs), an advanced media guide that simplifies content discovery and access to subscription services. The application is designed to initially work alongside Rovi i-Guide, one of the industry’s most widely deployed on-screen cable guides, to smooth the adoption of a more in-depth user experience that includes advanced search, recommendations and rich metadata. The announcement builds on the earlier launch of Rovi TotalGuide xD, a white-label search and discovery application that extends and connects the cable experience to tablets, smart phones and PC devices. Rovi TotalGuide Applications are a unique approach that Rovi believes will help service providers scale deployment based on user behaviors and preferences and enable their subscribers to become more comfortable with the new technology at their own pace.
In addition, Rovi announced that Oregon’s BendBroadband and Pennsylvania based MSO Armstrong have signed licensing agreements with Rovi to launch versions of TotalGuide to complement their current on-screen programming guide experience. BendBroadband plans to rollout both TotalGuide for STBs and TotalGuide xD to their subscribers; Armstrong began trials of TotalGuide xD in April and plans to launch the application to their subscribers starting Fall 2011.
The growth of internet-connected devices in homes has led to an increase in consumer appetite for new features and services across their entertainment media. Because of this, the overall pay TV industry is facing a barrage of competitive services. Rovi TotalGuide Applications enable cable service providers to take action and bring their cable video experience to a whole new level with a compelling and fun new entertainment experience and variety of cutting-edge features that help subscribers maximize the enjoyment of their pay TV service.
TotalGuide for STB provides an optimized high definition interface that enables subscribers to quickly see what’s on their favorite channels, search, and browse by programs, celebrities, cast and credits with Rovi “six degrees of discovery” across services offerings, from linear and on demand to DVR. In addition, Rovi TotalGuide for STB and xD are integrated to provide a consistent, entertaining navigation experience on multiple devices.
“We value our customers and are continually looking for ways to improve their entertainment experience. With the breadth of entertainment metadata, advanced search and recommendations that Rovi houses, TotalGuide for STBs and TotalGuide xD were easy choices in helping us to achieve our goal of a better experience for our subscribers,” stated John Farwell, VP of Business Operations for BendBroadband.
Rovi TotalGuide Applications are compatible with a wide range of currently deployed STBs and mobile devices enabling service providers to utilize their existing capital investment to make improvements to their video product and strategy. Powered by Rovi Cloud Services, the applications require minimal infrastructure investment and operational changes and are cost effective to deploy and operate.
“Roles for cable service providers are changing fast, and companies need to find new ways to remain competitive and offer consumers innovative solutions,” stated Corey Ferengul, executive vice president of Products at Rovi. “With Rovi TotalGuide for STBs and web-enabled devices, we are excited to be offering cable providers a competitive, easy-to-deploy solution that infuses a new and fun way for consumers to find and consume television content.”
