Joint research projects with world-class multi-disciplinary scientific teams will help drive development of new innovations and technologies for life sciences and biomedical research.

GE Healthcare, the healthcare division of General Electric Company, today opened a key new technology facility, the GE Healthcare Life Sciences Demonstration Laboratory, at the prestigious Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) in Stockholm, Sweden. The Demonstration Laboratory, which is equipped with GE Healthcare’s latest world-class tools and technologies for life sciences research, plans joint research collaborations with SciLifeLab scientists as they seek to understand some of the most pressing problems in human disease.

The SciLifeLab was established in 2010 as a national resource centre to foster large scale molecular biosciences and biomedical research in Sweden. The centre, which receives the majority of its funding from the Swedish government, has major facilities in Stockholm and Uppsala. SciLifeLab Stockholm is a joint collaboration between three universities - The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Karolinska Institute (KI) and Stockholm University (SU). Through joint research projects, SciLifeLab scientists will have access to some of the world’s most advanced analytical tools for life sciences research. By helping GE Healthcare to gain a deeper understanding into the use of its technologies in a leading research environment, the Demonstration Laboratory also promises to help drive the future development of new innovations for life sciences research The opening of the GE Healthcare Life Sciences Demonstration Laboratory supports GE healthymagination, GE’s $6 billion global commitment to deliver better healthcare to more people at lower cost.

Highlighting the significance of the GE Healthcare Life Sciences Demonstration Laboratory to SciLifeLab’s facilities, Mathias Uhlén said,"Our vision for SciLifeLab is to create a world-leading centre for molecular biosciences and medical research to foster greater understanding of the nature of human diseases. GE’s Demonstration Laboratory will be a significant and positive addition to the SciLifeLab.”

GE Healthcare is a major employer of Life Scientists in Sweden, with over 2000 employees at its key sites in Uppsala and Umea. GE Healthcare’s facilities in Sweden are at the forefront of global life sciences research.

"The SciLifeLab is assembling a world class multidisciplinary team to study some of medicine’s most pressing problems," said Peter Ehrenheim. “We now know that many of the future advances in medicine will be driven by advances in our understanding of cellular mechanisms at the molecular level. GE Healthcare has a long history of innovation in life sciences, and we are committed to grow in partnership with our customers.
