Just 26% have full strategy in place; 72% seek better enterprise-wide co-ordination
IT directors in the UK are risking serious impact from unexpected change events, according to new research conducted by Vanson Bourne and Change Governance leader, Serena® Software. Just 26% of IT directors and CIOs surveyed said that they had contingencies in place to fully manage unexpected change events. 14% admitted that they had no contingencies, and admitted the consequences could seriously damage their company's operations.
Companies are continually forced to deal with change in reaction to forces both inside and outside the organisation. These forces include regulatory compliance, marketplace conditions, competitive threats, globalisation, mergers and acquisitions, and more. The drive to improve business efficiency was cited by 58% of those questioned as one of the key drivers for change.
Change events can strain both human and financial resources, and expose a company to high costs, poor quality, and excessive risk. For unprepared companies, these consequences can be crippling. Even for those companies able to manage change effectively within a given silo - an area in the company where change initiatives are undertaken as discrete projects - the inability to see the interdependencies and impact of a change across the entire enterprise can have serious, damaging consequences. According to this research, 72% of IT directors in the UK are seeking 'better enterprise-wide co-ordination'.
Many companies rely only on Software Change Management (SCM) products to respond to change events. But SCM solutions focus only on application development, rather than the broader needs of the business. Many companies often have numerous SCM solutions, effectively creating multiple silos of change throughout the company. Serena Change Governance™ solutions offer a fundamentally new, enterprise-wide approach that enables companies to capitalise on today’s change events in ways that can transform their businesses.
"Businesses can’t afford to react to change defensively, tactically, or in isolated areas of the enterprise, commented Ian Forsyth, UK country manager at Serena Software. "With Change Governance solutions, all change-related activities - planning, developing, implementing, monitoring, and enforcing—are integrated across the enterprise to bridge silos of change and create a common frame of reference for business and IT."
This approach enables companies to understand the interdependencies and impact of a change before it happens, translate that understanding into effective policies and processes, and ensure consistent adoption of policies and processes across the enterprise—regardless of who originates the change, where the change will be implemented, or what tools and technologies
Serena's Change Governance approach incorporates three critical capabilities for effectively dealing with change, enabling companies to:
* Visualise: Understand the potential impact of a change before it happens
* Orchestrate: Translate that understanding into effective change policies and processes
* Enforce: Drive adoption of change policies and processes across the enterprise
By providing companies with the ability to visualise, orchestrate, and enforce change policies and processes, Serena Change Governance solutions enable IT to deliver strategic value to the business. This approach eliminates the high costs, poor quality, and excessive risks that often result from traditional methods of dealing with change. Quality, accountability, and economies improve. Costs are reduced; profitability and competitive advantages increase. Change is embraced as an opportunity, rather than perceived as a problem or a disruption. And with the ability to efficiently, consistently, and successfully implement change across the entire enterprise, attitudes toward change are transformed and companies are able to approach change confidently and proactively.
