Bad Roads Leave a 'Legal Pothole' in Scarborough Area

NewswireToday - /newswire/ - Toronto, Ontario, Canada, 2006/09/27 - Bad roads have caused many drivers to fall into a "legal pothole" whereby they have been ticketed for erratic driving or making illegal lane changes while avoiding massive potholes.

Calls for repairs to Toronto roads often seem to go unanswered, until massive potholes finally turn one of them into another one of Canada's Great Lakes after a heavy rain. However, the waist deep mess motorists are finding themselves in lately is caused not by flooding, but by their own attempts to avoid massive potholes on Toronto streets.

Swerving to avoid yet another pothole, a Scarborough resident was subsequently stopped by local police for driving erratically. When he tried to explain his actions, the answer he received was written on a yellow piece of paper; otherwise known as a ticket. The charge; illegal lane change.

"I have heard from other drivers that found themselves in similar situations, where they simply tried to avoid damaging their vehicles in one of the many potholes, only to find themselves now trying the defend themselves against a $110 ticket" stated Dan Sandor, Toronto City Councillor candidate in Ward 38 - Scarborough Centre, who says he spoke with several local residents who had faced similar problems. "I don't blame the police for stopping a driver who is swerving from lane to lane, but at the same time what are drivers supposed to do, dive head first into a huge hole in the ground?" Some motorists indicated they have considered filing a law suit against the city for failing to fix the roads, forcing the drivers to break the law. "I personally don't think law suits are the best way to go but I completely and totally understand their frustration." Sandor suggests that drivers instead take photographs of the offending potholes and attend traffic court to explain their cases. His office is also taking an inventory of potholes in his ward, Scarborough Centre, by email at dan[.]dansandor.com or phone at (416) 875-4700 which he will take to City Hall and file with the Transportation Department for request for immediate repairs. "This really is the job of the current city councillor, but either way it needs to get fixed, and I won't wait until I am elected on November 13th as it really doesn't matter to the people of Scarborough who does it, as long as it gets fixed, that's all that counts."

North America already has five Great Lakes and Torontonians are probably all in agreement that more lakes are not needed on the streets of Toronto next time there is a heavy rainfall and the potholes start to fill up.
