The world general purpose test equipment market is recovering from the economic recession of 2008-2009. Although the market will continue to grow, it is unlikely to witness the steep increase it had experienced in 2010 over the next few years. A prominent factor driving test and measurement (T&M) demand is the continuous development of wireless standards, which will create a "wireless decade" over the next ten years.

In terms of evolution, the market will witness the rollout of different types of wireless devices beyond the traditional ones. Smart meters, power model distribution, and wireless home animation will affect the general purpose T&M markets. In the public sector, there is significant adoption of new wireless technologies in the aerospace and defense segments, which is driving demand for general purpose test equipment.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (testandmeasurement.frost.com), World General Purpose Test & Equipment Markets, finds that the market earned revenues of $1,658.9 million by the end of 2010 and estimates this to reach $1,845.4 million in 2017.

"Long-term evolution (LTE) is poised to be the next-generation technology to drive the telecommunication industry," says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Mariano Kimbara. "Network operators are ready to implement LTE and deploy it over high speed packet access HSPA or 3G technologies."

LTE is slated to become one of the major cellular communication technologies in the foreseeable future. Network operators have very aggressive deployment timelines for LTE. The need for higher bandwidth speed for wireless is driving adoption of LTE.

As a general trend, customers are increasingly using their PC as part of their measurement setup. They control the measurement setup through a PC or use the PC as part of the measurement equipment.

Though the prospects for the market are bright, some aspects are slowing its momentum. The general purpose test equipment market is a developed and mature market. Hence, there is a lack of opportunities for innovation. Innovation in this industry is limited to increase in frequency coverage of test equipment and accuracy in measurement.

Technical demand spurs the T&M equipment markets; thus, a slow rate of innovation would result in slower growth for the market.

"Over the years, stand-alone test equipment has been the norm in the general purpose test equipment market," says Kimbara. "However, due to the need for more sophisticated test equipment with multi-functional testing capability, the market has been shifting toward integrated test equipment."

Consequently, the stand-alone test equipment market is experiencing restrained growth. Increasing cost pressure on products in the commercial markets is forcing T&M equipment manufacturers to keep improving the price/performance ratio of their products.

In this scenario, participants in this space must strive to improve cost of ownership to ensure business progression. They must focus on reducing corrective maintenance action by working closely with customers to drive their product development.

Efforts must be directed toward meeting technical as well as economic requirements. Improvement of cost of ownership in the test and equipment market is not just about lowering the purchase price. It involves an understanding of the real cost from the point of view of the product life cycle, to arrive at an accurate cost model.
