“Work on Houston Solari Hospice Care’s inpatient hospice home is right on schedule and has been progressing smoothly, ” said Chuck Zube, project manager and vice president of Spaw Maxwell, a Houston-based construction company that specializes in commercial and health-care construction. “The stucco on the exterior of the building is finished, the clay tile roof is completed, the windows are installed and the crew is nearly finished hanging the drywall and installing the heating and air conditioning units, paving the way for final inspections soon and receiving the certificate of occupancy for an April 8 completion date.”

“It’s amazing how fast the construction is moving forward. A dream will soon become a reality as we prepare to open the doors to our new inpatient hospice home, ” said Doris Brown, executive director of Houston Solari Hospice Care. “It’s exciting to see that the exterior of the hospice home is almost complete, the beautiful arched windows are in, and you can actually walk through the building and see where the patients’ rooms will be. Residents are expected to move in shortly after the grand opening in mid-May.”

Key to keeping the project on target are the weekly walk-throughs and the construction meetings. Houston Solari Hospice Care President and CEO Gary Polsky is so pleased and confident of the progress of the construction, that he has set May 18 as the grand opening event, complete with an officiated ribbon-cutting ceremony that is open to the public.

The free-standing facility located at 9714 South Gessner Road is specifically designed to address the needs of patients facing complex end-of-life issues, such as pain management, symptom control and medical procedures. The hospice home will house 12 private-care suites in a home-like environment for patients in their final days. Much like its inpatient hospice home in Las Vegas, Houston Solari Hospice Care’s new inpatient center is designed with patients and their families in mind. The home will also feature a soothing family gathering room and a serene chapel for spiritual meditation.

Charlotte L. Lampe Interiors, a Houston-based design boutique, provided an extra special professional touch that exceeded expectations. Comfortable furnishings, soothing colors and warm textures create a supportive, home-styled atmosphere for patients and their families.

The 8,000-square-foot building, designed by the Houston-based Wilson Architectural Group, has a “Texas/Tuscan feel” with Austin limestone, a rich terra cotta tile roof and numerous high-arched windows to let in warm natural light. Full of cozy spaces for families to gather and spend quiet time together, the home is also designed to make the most of its wooded lot that includes existing 150-year-old pecan trees. Lush landscaping will add to the serenity of the two-acre site and will include magnolia trees, Savannah holly trees, camellia trees, as well as colorful roses and oleanders. In addition, the sprawling and well-manicured grounds feature a meditation garden, pergola and conversation areas.

“Houston Solari Hospice Care’s new inpatient home will allow us to help more patients with life-limiting illnesses in Houston to receive compassionate and comprehensive end-of-life care in a warm and friendly home-like atmosphere with their family and loved ones nearby, ” said Gary W. Polsky, president and chief executive officer, Solari Hospice Care. “Many doctors, case managers and nurses in Houston’s renowned medical community recognize the tremendous benefits of a local inpatient hospice home that’s in close proximity to the area’s numerous hospitals, clinics and medical facilities.”

Houston Solari Hospice Care has been helping patients and their families since 2002. From grief support to support for caregivers, Houston Solari Hospice Care serves the needs of many. In September 2004, Solari Hospice Care sponsored its first Camp Solari, a bereavement camp for children who have lost a loved one. Supported through donations and fundraising, Camp Solari teaches children—along with their families—healthy ways to express their feelings, meet others who are experiencing similar losses and continue life while honoring the lost loved one. Monthly grief support groups are also available and are open to the community free of charge.
