ANYONE in the world can now sign up to experience what its like to be in a Harvard classroom through the Harvard Extension School, this year offering 100 courses via the internet. These courses are taught by distinguished Harvard professors, lecturers, and affiliates as well as other notable individuals from area universities and practitioners in the field.
There are three unique aspects to the Harvard Extension School's distance education program:
- 24 of these online courses are videos of actual HARVARD COLLEGE courses (and one Havard Law School course) available for viewing online only by Harvard Extension School students. Same professors, same work, same grading system. Anyone in the world can now experience a Harvard education.
- All Harvard Extension School courses are presented by streaming video. This gives the student a virtual look into the Harvard classroom, and the feeling of actually being there.
- Most Harvard Extension School online courses are also offered concurrently on the Harvard campus. This gives the student the opportunity to attend some classes if in the Boston area while viewing the remainder online. This is a convenient option for local students who have job and family commitments that make it difficult to attend class at a given time.
These courses include those taught by distinguished Harvard professors such as Stephen Rosen (International Conflict and Cooperation in the Modern World), Marjorie Garber (Shakespeare and Modern Culture), and Harry Lewis (Bits), and offered on topics such as The History of Blues in America and The Learned Dog: Learning Theory, Animal Learning, and the Practice of Animal Training.
Two programs—the Certificate in Applied Sciences and the Certificate in Environmental Management—may be completed online. The Masters in Information Technology can be completed ALMOST entirely online, while credits earned online may be applied toward other Harvard Extension School degree and certificate programs.
Registration for fall term classes continues through October 1; registration for spring term classes begins in early December.
According to Jeffry Z. of Boston, a distnce education student working for a semester in Italy, "While volunteering at a hospital in Perugia, Italy, I took an online statistics course that was a prerequiste for nursing school, the course was convenient and the professor was very available via email. Best of all, I didn't have to put my education on hold while I advanced my career."
