Computer Aid International Named as Event Charity for Linux World
Computer Aid International Named as Event Charity for Linux World

NewswireToday - /newswire/ - London, Olympia, United Kingdom, 09/20/2006 - Computer Aid International, the world’s largest and most experienced not-for-profit supplier of professionally refurbished computers to schools and community organisations in developing countries has been adopted by LinuxWorld 2006.

Computer Aid International will be exhibiting at the show and is inviting organisations to make a difference to the lives of children in the developing world by supporting the charity through donations of Pentium 3 and Pentium 4 PCs as well as old mobile phones and unwanted printer cartridges.

“Over the past year, we have become victims of our own success, and now find ourselves unable to keep pace with the demand for PCs from schools and community organisations in developing countries. People are beginning to realise the value that IT can bring to a country – and it starts with education,” explained Tony Roberts, CEO, Computer Aid International. “By exhibiting at LinuxWorld we can reach the decision makers in orgnanistaions and encourage them not to simply sell or store old PCs but to donate them to us thereby giving vital education skills to children in Kenya, Ethiopia, Chile and Zambia, to mention but a few.”

Since 1997, Computer Aid has refurbished and distributed 75,000 PCs to 106 countries with donations from British Airways, Ford, Virgin Travelstore, Honda Formula 1, the National Audit Office and Packard Bell.

“Over two million useable PCs are currently thrown away every year by UK businesses. If organisations can send Computer Aid a fraction of these PCs it can make a real difference,” commented Sarah Williams, event director, Turret Group, who is organising the event.
“We hope that the exposure at this year’s show will help the charity to meet this demand and moreover support their ‘Make IT Happen’ campaign which has a target of refurbishing 100,000 PCs by its 10th anniversary next year.”

Computer Aid International also collects unwanted printer cartridges and mobile phones in recycling boxes provided by the charity. Once full, Computer Aid’s partner, Reclaim IT will collect the box and donate approximately £25 to the charity. This money goes towards helping the Computer Aid to pay for the cost of collection, professional refurbishment, upgrading, cleaning, packing and shipping of donated PCs to developing countries.
