The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) released a new data compilation detailing National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding trends from FY 1995-2012 that spotlights the financial crisis threatening progress in biomedical research. A statement accompanying the slide set describes the dire situation facing the agency, which does not have sufficient funds to support all of the critical opportunities before us. Citing data from the report, FASEB President William T. Talman commented that “in a time of unprecedented scientific opportunity, it is discouraging that the number of grants funded by NIH is actually decreasing.”

“This dire situation will become even more devastating if the proposed cuts to the NIH budget contained in H.R. 1 are enacted,” Talman warned. He has written a letter to all members of the Senate urging them to reject the House version of the continuing resolution for fiscal year 2011, explaining that “cutting back on our investment in NIH would harm individuals in every state by delaying research that can lead to cures and slowing the discovery of new treatments for costly illnesses.” He is also urging scientists to call their Senators and make them aware of the damaging effects that H.R. 1 would have on medical research and quality of life. “Cutting the NIH budget by $1.6 billion this year will slow the discovery of new treatments, lead to wasteful termination of projects, discourage young people from pursuing careers in science, and ultimately cost some Americans their jobs,” Talman wrote. “We need everyone in the scientific community – researchers, trainees, and lab personnel – to tell their Senators to reject the NIH budget cuts.” FASEB will be sending this appeal for action to its member societies.

FASEB (fasebj.org) is composed of 23 societies with more than 100,000 members, making it the largest coalition of biomedical research associations in the United States. FASEB enhances the ability of scientists and engineers to improve—through their research—the health, well-being and productivity of all people. Our mission is to advance health and welfare by promoting progress and education in biological and biomedical sciences through service to our member societies and collaborative advocacy.
