At the annual European IT Excellence Awards ceremony in London, Critical Software carried off the award for Enterprise Solutions. Critical’s award-winning project was the development of a completely revised technology platform for the 112 emergency service in Portugal, under contract to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The new 112.pt service involves the creation of four call centres (North, South, Azores and Madeira) with a technology infrastructure to support all of the country’s emergency response services. Critical’s challenge was to produce a system that offered a step-up in the quality and timeliness of responses to emergencies, with greatly improved co-ordination between the various services using it.
"Critical Software was brought in to develop a technology platform that would fully integrate multiple systems and strengthen the entire information and communications infrastructure," said Critical Software’s Business Development Manager, Filipe Freitas.
"This award recognizes the quality of the work we performed. 112.pt is a modular system that supports pre-attendance services, forwarding contacts, geo-location and identification, registration and follow-up of contacts and occurrences, as well as ensuring interoperability between different security and defence forces," Freitas continued.
The initial phases of the project are complete, with the 112.pt system running live in the Southern regional call-centre. During 2011 the system will be expanded with the development of the Northern regional call-centre with the centres in the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores following soon after.
European IT Excellence Awards (iteawards.com) are an initiative of IT Europa and acknowledge the crucial role that independent software vendors (ISVs) and solution providers play in solving real-world problems. Organisations from twenty two countries entered for the awards, which were announced on February 10th at a gala dinner at the London Marriott, Grosvenor Square.
