CTA Construction Co., Inc. has finished work on the new $12.5 million police station at the University of Massachusetts. The two-story, brick-faced structure is designed to operate around-the-clock and serve a public safety as well as educational role on the university campus.

"CTA Construction is pleased to present UMass-Amherst with a police facility that helps protect the community and showcases energy efficiency on campus. As a leader in constructing buildings in academic settings, CTA understood the need to create a secure structure that was nonetheless welcoming to the entire campus community, " said Jeff Hazelwood, Project Executive of CTA Construction, a Waltham-based general contractor.

The 27,130-square-foot, two-story complex is home to the UMass-Amherst Police Department. It provides space for multiple police functions including patrol, investigation and emergency response. The facility will also house crime prevention and educational services at the Amherst campus. As designed, the finished building is inviting and approachable, while maintaining the security required of a police station.

The building also meets the highest levels of energy efficiency and sustainability standards, which according to UMass, is the first campus building to do so. The project was built to meet the standards of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold level, a certification system administered by the U.S. Green Building Council.

In the past 10 years, CTA has completed more than $300 million worth of public construction projects, including schools, libraries and public works facilities. Other public safety buildings completed by CTA include the Revere Police Headquarters and East Fire Station, two new Belmont Fire Stations, and the Lunenburg Public Safety facility.

Work on municipal buildings has won CTA the 2010 Public Works Project of the Year from the American Public Works Association and the 2010 Excellence in Construction Eagle Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors of Massachusetts.

CTA (ctaconstruction.com) has earned an average rating of 93 out of 100 by the Massachusetts Division of Capital Asset Management, a state agency overseeing public construction contractors.
