Recently, Genentech’s ECP-1 Bacterial Manufacturing Facility was recognized with the 2010 Facility of the Year Award, by ISPE, INTERPHEX and Pharmaceutical Processing. The facility produces Lucentis, a drug that is used to treat patients with wet age-related macular degeneration.
The construction execution of the facility was an innovative process that took a modular approach – bringing together international companies to construct many large-bay modules that were then shipped overseas, interconnected and completed at the facility’s permanent location, Taus, Singapore.
Stonhard, world leader in seamless floor, wall and lining systems, was involved in the project, providing floors for modular units that were constructed in Goose Creek, SC, in conjunction with Jacobs Engineering. “The modular units were then shipped by boat to Singapore and in coordination with our affiliate, we installed the areas to link the modules together, sanded and applied the finish coats, and completed final detail work on site,” explains John Walsh, Stonhard’s Director of Business Development.
Remarkably, the Genentech facility was completed in unprecedented time – 2 weeks ahead of its rigorous 24-month timeline – and more than 10 percent under its budget. “The entire Stonhard team worked together to help make this a successful project,” Walsh said, “and the ability for us to have resources in both locations and discuss this early on with the design team allowed us to deliver a seamless system to Genentech.”
