Sogefi develops and manufactures a wide variety of products for several different applications within the powertrain of the vehicle. These range from top cover engine air intake systems, remote engine air intake systems, eco engine lubrication modules, spin on lubrication systems, diesel fuel filters to diesel fuel modules and gasoline filters. Such competencies have given Sogefi an edge over products and services offered by its competitors, while strengthening its market position.
"Such a wide range of products supporting the development of greener cars is unprecedented in the powertrain industry," notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Arif Basheer. "All of Sogefi's products are aimed at reducing CO2 emissions and increasing fuel economy, which benefit OEMs by way of lowered CO2 fleet averages as well as end-consumers by offering them better fuel economy and lower CO2 taxes."
Currently, Sogefi produces over 180 million filters annually. The company's annual production in Europe was more than 16.5 million units in 2009 and Sogefi counts all the leading passenger car and commercial vehicle OEMs as its clients.
Premium OEMs with relatively higher CO2 fleet averages are likely to be potential customers of Sogefi by 2014-15. Integrating Sogefi's filters in the premium segment vehicles will help reduce CO2 emissions. Sogefi is also poised to leverage the growth of filters for volume OEMs, which is likely to be around 30-35 per cent in 2016, when compared to 2009.
"The company has a market share of 25.4 per cent among OEM suppliers and 43.3 per cent among independent after-market suppliers," comments Basheer. "Sogefi's continued endeavour to help make greener cars will boost its market share considerably among OEMs and the after-market."
Sogefi has consistently focused on providing greener technologies. It has achieved this through strategies embracing weight reduction, friction reduction between parts, engine ageing reduction and increased compatibility with bio-fuels.
"A key accomplishment has been weight reduction: during the last five years, Sogefi has managed to reduce the weight of liquid filtration systems by 25 per cent, which corresponds to around 1.2 kgs for a diesel vehicle," remarks Basheer. "This is made possible with the use of light materials such as glass reinforced plastic and compact designs."
Notably, Sogefi has effected an overall reduction in 3 kgs along with 0.2 per cent reduction in fuel consumption for Euro 5 engines, when compared to Euro 4 engines. Lower fuel consumption results in increased appeal for end-consumers, which has a positive impact on customer value.
A highlight of Sogefi's filtration systems is water filtration. The company's unique, multi-layer ‘Diesel3Tech' technology enables the protection of ideal injection systems in bio-diesel under all conditions.
"The result of such a filtration is clean fuel," explains Basheer. "It offers a cascading effect where thorough filtration results in better injection life, which, in turn, offers higher engine power output and also has a positive effect on fuel economy."
For the Product Line Strategy Award, the following criteria were used to benchmark Sogefi's performance against key competitors: breadth of product line, size of addressable customer base, impact on customer value, impact on market share and breadth of applications/markets served.
