The World Tourism Organization regularly publishes in five official languages: Arabic, English, French, Russian and Spanish, and occasionally in others, such as Italian, German and Portuguese. In total, the UNWTO translates well over two million words per year thanks to a mixture of in-house and freelance resources.
To professionally coordinate and manage their linguistic assets and foster an efficient use of translators’ time, the UNWTO has also been using the integrated computer-assisted translation tools STAR Transit and STAR Termstar since 2003. However, lately, recognising the growing importance of disseminating its key terminology on a global scale, the UNWTO started to look out for a viable and cost-effective solution to suit their needs. Blanca Peral, Chief of Translation, adduces several arguments for choosing STAR WebTerm: “STAR WebTerm will provide the UNWTO with the ability to post our standard-setting terminology lists on the Internet on a real-time basis. Translators, interpreters, copywriters, professors or anyone else interested in tourism terminology across the globe will be able to consult our terminology bank online. Furthermore, the ability to easily personalise the browser layout and the excellent experience with STAR Transit and STAR Termstar, and very especially the outstanding after-sales service provided by STAR Servicios Lingüísticos, proved to be a major factor in our decision”.
WebTerm is STAR’s solution for managing and disseminating terminology among distributed teams. It provides employees and terminology experts of multinational corporations or organizations with easy, internal and cross-organizational access to terminology using a standard Web browser. Search options and filter functions make retrieval and editing fast and efficient. By allowing to easily publish glossaries and guides to employees and freelancers across the Internet, WebTerm eliminates errors and inconsistencies in global communications. It helps in the brand management, provides consistent language in multinational communications and promotes regulatory compliance. It also makes standardizing, explaining, and visualizing terms in many languages much easier.
