A GE steam turbine will be used to convert the Kallpa Generacion power plant in Chilca, Peru into combined-cycle operation, significantly increasing both the efficiency and the output of the power production at the site. Located about 60 kilometers south of Lima, the Kallpa facility is the largest thermoelectric plant in Peru.

Under contracts totaling more than $40 million, GE will provide a 207D-11 steam turbine, maintenance services and spare parts for the project. The steam turbine will join three gas turbines operating at the site, bringing the total output to approximately 850 megawatts. Posco Engineering and Construction is the lead contractor for the combined-cycle project, which will use natural gas from the Camisea gas pipeline near the site.

“The government of Peru is promoting the efficient use of natural gas from the Camisea Reservoir, and this type of plant configuration supports that strategy,” said Jorge Monaco, project manager, Kallpa Combined Cycle Conversion Project. “The project also contributes to the region’s economic growth, representing a total investment of about $400 million.”

The GE 207D-11 steam turbine provides reliable, efficient and cost-effective combined-cycle service. Converting the Kallpa plant to combined-cycle operation is expected to increase the site’s output by 280 megawatts.

“With combined-cycle, the Kallpa plant will be able to generate more power without having to increase fuel usage,” said Roberto Yepes, director—Andean Region for GE Energy. “The 207D-11 steam turbine will use steam generated by exhaust energy from the gas turbines in a bottoming cycle, helping Peru meet its need for more power more efficiently.”

The GE 207D-11 steam turbine is expected to be shipped in the first quarter of 2011 with commercial operation expected by the first quarter of 2012.
