Air Techniques, Inc., announced today that the Classic model from its ScanX digital radiography line received the maximum rating of “5 plus” by THE DENTAL ADVISOR. The highly regarded science-based publication gave the ScanX Classic device a 98% clinical rating and named it an “Editors’ Choice.”

Founded in 1984 and inspired by Consumer Reports, the mission of THE DENTAL ADVISOR (dentaladvisor.com) is to provide the dental profession with evidence-based and clinically relevant information on dental restorative products, infection control products and dental equipment. The products it tests are sent to a randomly selected group of 20 to 30 of its 250 Clinical Consultants. Each Clinical Consultant and his or her staff integrate the product into their daily routine, use the product regularly over a given period of time and then complete a comprehensive survey.

The Classic is one of three ScanX digital radiography systems that utilize reusable phosphor storage plates (PSP) in place of film to produce diagnostic quality intraoral and extraoral digital radiographs. It allows computer storage, processing, retrieval and display of the digitized radiographic images utilizing the dental practice’s software and computer. The ScanX line incorporates an In-Line Erase feature that erases and prepares phosphor plates for reuse immediately after the plate is read by the system; no secondary erase function is needed.

Another highly efficient ScanX feature is Intelligent Track Control, which allows practices with multiple operatories to process multiple shots by two operators at the same time. Once the images are captured, they are directed to the proper patient records in the appropriate operatory for immediate review by the dentist with the patient. ScanX systems support the conversion of traditional panoramic and cephalometric x-ray machines to digital by replacing the film with a PSP of the same size. The ScanX Classic also accepts intraoral PSPs in sizes 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4. The equipment operates in normal room lighting, is wireless, and uses virtually the same workflow and placement technique as film.

The Clinical Consultants evaluating the ScanX Classic praised its image clarity, its superior image development speed, and the fact that no costly chemicals are required.

According to Riad Abuelafiya, Air Techniques VP sales and marketing, the federal government’s National Health Information Infrastructure (NHII) initiative will require all dental practices to store and share all patient data digitally starting January 1, 2014. “Practices that upgrade from film radiography to ScanX technology will be able to comply with this mandate,” he said. “And as this evaluation by THE DENTAL ADVISOR clearly indicates, they will also benefit from the ScanX’ system’s many performance, productivity and profitability advantages relative to film.”
