The five South Wales Ports (Newport, Cardiff, Barry, Port Talbot and Swansea) being protected by Senator include the Swansea / Cork ferry terminus within the Port of Swansea; this is of particular note as this brings additional specialist services, responsibilities and requirements as all foot passengers and vehicles pass through the dedicated Security screening area. These freight, vehicle and passenger checks apply to all sailings and are conducted in-line with the International Ship and Port Facility (Security) regulations 2004 (ISPS). Senator’s search teams who work along side UK Border Control Officers are specially trained to undertake the searching of vehicles, passengers and personal property – this in addition to the PFSO and ISPS training for Senator personnel… in total, sixty two Senator Personnel successfully completed a full NVQ2 qualification in addition to their basic First Aid training within the first month of operations.
For the partnership with ABP, Senator provided eight members of staff who successfully passed the PFSO (Port Facility Security Officer) training course – these comprising a strategic, multi-tier management structure designed specifically to enhance performance and ensure a seamless communications and operational system tailored to each location with an overseeing senior management team and shift commanders. The Senator personnel, in the spirit of a true working partnership, have apparel incorporating the ABP brand; as do the vehicles which carry ABP livery. The uniforms, shoes and protective apparel is state-of-the-art military standard; ergonomic, comfortable and user-friendly to protect the security operatives from the climate and ever changing port environments.
Further innovations include access control and asset tracking utilising leading edge technologies and the deployment of an LPG fuelled fleet of fully equipped vehicles – equipped for purpose with spares, amber beacon lights, safety and traffic management equipment in preparation for the demands of the environment, long duration mobile/perimeter patrols (each vehicle is expected to exceed 40,000 miles per annum) and heavy load escorts. The vehicle fleet is completed with saloon cars used for port reception, shuttle and fast response duties.
A port never sleeps – making this a 24/7/365 project, covering many hundreds of acres of the port facilities in five locations. The roles vary hugely – from mobile patrols, gatehouse manning, vehicle and passenger screening through to ‘customer facing’ activities such as controlling restricted areas when cruise vessels such as “MS The World” visit Cardiff, the requirement to react to and coordinate special projects or heightened security situations.
