This was the concept for an article recently published in the August, 2006 issue of Antiques Roadshow Insider Magazine. It was written by Sharon Palmer, a freelance writer, who lives in California. Two of the authorities interviewed for the article were Barb Mauzy, author of several books on kitchen collectibles and Linda Rosenzweig, author of the newsletter, “From Mama’s Kitchen” on Tias.com.
Mama’s Treasures has been evolving into a kitchen specialty store over the last three years according to the owner. Rosenzweig reports that her vintage kitchen items are her biggest seller, mainly because of the price and the functionality of the item. “People are becoming more interested in using vintage items on a daily basis and whole kitchens are being decorated with them. The main reason is that the items can still be found at an affordable price. They often are in the original box with very little or no use. The quality is better and they last longer than the newer items on the market. Collectors are attracted because there are hundreds of different ways to collect. One person might collect a certain color, another might stick to a certain brand, and there are some who collect by decade.”
According to the article, kitchen utensils are very hot right now and Rosenzweig agrees that her sales reflect this trend. “Anything from the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s, seem to be big sellers, but I also have a lot of customers who prefer primitive kitchen items. Vintage advertising from these decades is also very popular. People are finding very unique ways to use these items for display and business.” She reports that her kitchen items have appeared in commercials, plays, and become parts of new products, such as gift baskets or shadow boxes. It appears their is no limit to this often overlooked area of collecting.
