Accurate testing is needed for the early identification and mapping of diseases to control their spread and reduce treatment costs.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (medicaldevices.frost.com), Clinical Diagnostics Industry in East Africa, finds that the market earned revenues of $80.7 million in 2009 and estimates these to reach $182.6 million in 2016.

East African countries are already on the World Health Organisation’s (WHO’s) list of 22 high-burden infectious disease-affected countries. According to the WHO, Africa accounts for 90 per cent of child mortality due to malaria and AIDS, and 50 per cent of all child mortality due to diarrhoeal disease and pneumonia. In addition, the continent has a quarter of the world's disease burden but only 3.0 percent of its healthcare workers, restricting the delivery of healthcare services.

"The region lacks skilled and trained laboratory personnel due to the low-quality of education and training imparted," says Frost & Sullivan Healthcare Research Analyst Sandhya Miseer. "Further, the trained staff is lured away by countries that pay higher salaries for the same responsibility."

Equipment donations by companies that do not provide the necessary training also limit product uptake in the clinical diagnostics industry.

Owing to this paucity of skilled personnel, there is considerable demand for high-quality, cost-effective and automated products. A rise in the number of communicable and non-communicable diseases in the region will further drive growth within the clinical diagnostics industry. Education and awareness will also increase the uptake of diagnostic tools.

"Investments and funding in East African countries are increasing, as investors are beginning to realise its market potential," notes the analyst. "Economic improvements allow the countries in the region to build and improve infrastructure and invest more money in their people which, in turn, will enhance healthcare delivery and services."

Clinical Diagnostics Industry in East Africa is part of the Medical Devices Growth Partnership Services programme, which also includes research in the following markets: The Medical Imaging Market in Tanzania, South African Advanced Wound Care Market, Strategic Analysis of the Healthcare Industry in Zambia and Overview of the Healthcare Industry in Namibia. All research services included in subscriptions provide detailed market opportunities and industry trends that have been evaluated following extensive interviews with market participants.
