BRP’s ECO mode is the newest function of the intelligent Throttle Control (iTC) system on select Sea-Doo watercraft and boats. BRP’s fuel-efficient ECO mode has been engineered to provide boating families the best value for their recreational budgets by maximizing their fun-per-gallon (litre). It is one of many new, customizable power delivery modes featured on the Sea-Doo 210 Challenger boat that gives the captain more control than ever before.
“ECO mode is one of the many new technologies BRP is developing for our customers to be as environmentally responsible during recreational activities as in everyday life,” stated Yves Leduc, vice-president and general manager, North America division. “We want to ensure our marine products keep pace with other forms of transportation. BRP is committed to be a leader in that regard by spreading ECO mode to four Sea-Doo watercraft models and eight Sea-Doo boat models in 2011. It is an honour to be recognized for this new technology as the real winners are our customers and the environment.”
BRP’s iTC system is a fly-by-wire throttle system that allows the captain to electronically control how power is delivered through various modes. In addition to ECO mode, select Sea-Doo boats and watercraft come equipped with docking mode, that limits power delivery to a maximum of 3,500 rpm (8,000 rpm is the normal maximum), ski mode (offering preset ramp up and speed control), cruise control and slow speed mode.
The staff at Boating magazine explained why they chose BRP's Sea-Doo 210 Challenger boat as their Eco Award Winner by stating, “Let’s say you’re planning to put 10 hours of general cruising time on your boat during the next two weeks. What if you were told you could save 25 gallons of gas during those outings by pressing a button on the dash? You’d have to say, ‘Show me the button!,’” The article went on to explain their statement. “In our test, 5 mph (8 kph) over the most fuel-efficient speed had us burning 11 gallons (41.6 litres) per hour (gph) of gas. ECO mode had us at 8.5 gph (32.2 lph). Over 10 hours, that’s a difference of 25 gallons (94.6 litres) if you’re just cruising. Make it 50 hours and you’re looking at a potential waste of 125 gallons (473.2 litres), just by missing the mark…Over time, that will equate to a lot of gas savings when the right buttons are pushed.”
The availability of ECO mode has been expanded in the 2011 line and is now included as standard equipment on BRP’s new Sea-Doo GTI Limited 155, GTI SE 130, GTI SE 155 and GTX 155 watercraft. ECO mode is also available on the 2011 Sea-Doo 210 & 230 Challenger and their SE versions, 210 & 230 SP, 210 and 230 WAKE boats.
