Applied Voice & Speech Technologies, Inc. (AVST) today announced that CallXpress® 8.1 supports application virtualization. As enterprises continue to recognize the immediate time savings and resource optimization that comes with virtualization, AVST now supports VMware® vSphere™ 4, the industry’s leading virtualization platform, for its Unified Communications platform. Virtualization is a complement to AVST’s comprehensive Neverfail® high availability and disaster recovery solution and strengthens the overall resiliency of the CallXpress platform.

CallXpress Application Virtualization
AVST customers can now take advantage of the benefits of virtualization in their CallXpress deployments by reducing the number of servers used to deploy CallXpress applications. CallXpress applications that run on virtual machines include, Call Servers, Web PhoneManager, Message Cache Manager, Integrated Client Access, Digital Networking, and Fax-over-IP.

“Enterprises deploy virtualization to save on resources and data center costs. Our customers are now able to take their virtualized infrastructure one step further by running CallXpress applications on their virtual machines,” said Tom Minifie, AVST Chief Technology Officer. “CallXpress customers can start by virtualizing one CallXpress application, then monitor resource usage and add other applications as needed to maximize server resource utilization.”

Support for virtualization bolsters the CallXpress Neverfail high availability and disaster recovery solution by eliminating redundant server components. When a snapshot of the virtual machine is taken, enterprises are able to recover quickly in the event of a failure. For example, if a physical server running a CallXpress application fails, the server can be replaced and the virtual machine is easily restored from the snapshot; enabling a full recovery of the CallXpress application quickly.

Support for 64-bit Environments
In addition to virtualization, AVST has added support for 64-bit environments on the client and server side. According to Stephan Kleynhans, Gartner Research Vice President, about 50 percent of organizations are planning to roll out Windows® 7 as 64-bit.1 CallXpress 8.1 supports the migration to 64-bit environments by offering:

• Support for Windows Server® 2008 R2 64-bit server
• Running administration and end user client applications on Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit
• Unified Messaging integrated into Exchange 2010 and Outlook® 2010 32-bit and 64-bit
