Kevin Alewine, director of renewable energy services for Shermco Industries, recently presented a paper on “Wind Turbine Generator Reliability – Predictable Failures, Causes and Suggestions” at the Utility Wind Integration Group Wind Turbine Operations and Maintenance Users Group Meeting in Austin, Texas.
Alewine’s paper identified the most common failure modes of wind turbine generators, provided failure frequency analysis and included suggestions for improving reliability by proper installation and maintenance.
“In this growing industry, it is imperative that we gain a more comprehensive understanding of why wind turbine generators fail, and also how failures might be prevented,” said Alewine. “UWIG is an organization dedicated to furthering the collective knowledge of this industry and I hope I can contribute to a better overall understanding of wind turbine generator reliability.”
Alewine, a 30-year veteran of electrical insulation system evaluation and specification, also recently co-authored a statistical study on the failure modes in wind turbine generators, which was based on data from nearly two gigawatts of repaired, refurbished or remanufactured wind turbine generators.
