GE’s Sensing business has won an order to provide over 130 subsea wellhead sensors for installation in the Goliat field, which is located within the Norwegian sector of the Barents Sea. The order has been placed by Aker Solutions, who were awarded the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract in 2009 by the field licensee and operator Eni Norge AS. The sensors will be delivered over the next two years and production from the field is expected in 2013.

As Fabian Dawson, Global Commercial Manager, Upstream, at GE’s Sensing business, comments, “We are very excited to be working with Aker Solutions on this challenging project. Apart from the excellence of our PTX400 sensors, I believe that major factors in our success were our very strong technical and project management track record, the proven performance of our sensors in similar installations and the very good working relationship we have developed with Aker Solutions as a preferred partner on numerous key projects over the last decade.”

The scope of the Aker contract includes subsea templates and manifolds, riser bases, subsea trees and control systems as well as umbilicals and workover systems. The PTX400 sensors will be installed on the trees and manifolds at depths of up to 1800 metres and will provide long-term precise measurement for flow assurance and integrity purposes.

The PTX400 series has been designed to meet the increasingly stringent requirements for subsea operation and offer extremely high reliability at seawater depths of up to 4500m. Featuring GE’s (Druck) propriety piezo-resistive measuring technology continuously developed over the last 40 years, the PTX400 series can measure pressure to an accuracy of better than 0.025%FS and temperature better than 0.2%FS. They feature digital characterization for extremely high accuracy and the versions to be supplied to the Goliat project will also feature dual redundancy outputs for even greater reliability.

GE’s Sensing business is a leading supplier of subsea sensors for wellhead process and control module hydraulic applications and has over 4000 successful installations worldwide. In addition, The company offers a wide portfolio of products to measure temperature, liquid level, moisture and humidity, gas concentration and flow rate for applications in the chemical, petrochemical and oil and gas sectors.
