The advantages of this "intelligent" propeller from Voith lie in its material structure and its design. Apart from a metal hub, the propeller blades consist of carbon fiber compounds. Voith produces its Contur Propeller with blade diameters of up to three meters. The propeller is primarily used in yachts, passenger ships, military applications and authority vessels - like the aforementioned patrol boats, as many as 10 of which are each being fitted with two of these Voith drive systems on behalf of Dutch Water Management.
Apart from weight savings, which amount to up to 35 % compared to bronze propellers, the Contur Propeller from Voith excels by quieter running, excellent vibration behavior, improved acceleration properties and consequently up to 10 % higher maximum speeds, as well as fuel savings of approximately 15%.
Carbon fiber compounds are ten times more stable as steel, but weigh only one fifth of this material. These material characteristics have a positive impact on the maintenance and service costs. If damaged, individual propeller blades can be easily replaced in a dock or by a diver. In addition, the propeller blades are supplied ex works with a special surface coating that has a growth-repellent effect.
