Next week begins the school year 2010-2011. With municipal budgets strained, it will be a challenging year for staff, faculty, parents, and students in any jurisdiction in the nation. Northern Virginia, although affluent by national standards, has not escaped the brunt of the economic downturn that has impacted all school districts. Fairfax County, home of over 175,300 students, has seen the largest set of public school budget cuts in decades. These cuts will impact student achievement.
Class size throughout Northern Virginia has begun to rise. Students will be experiencing large classes, even in AP classes. Teachers are now stretched with large teaching loads and extra duties caused by cuts in administrative staff. As a result individualized instruction is limited in general education classes. Students will need to develop coping skills in the classroom. “No Child Left Behind” helps some students. Students in AP and IB classes (which are overloaded as well) are perhaps more prepared to cope.
The child in the middle is often left behind to fend for him/herself. Tutoring can help individualize the learning process. A renowned elementary school principal in Arlington County has been quoted as saying “When you have a child in the middle, you must be their constant advocate.” Playing the role of advocate for your child is necessary to bridge the gap between public resources and student needs. One of the ways parents can bridge that gap is to seek the services of qualified tutors.
Northern Virginia Tutoring (nvtutoring.com) urges parents to be proactive advocates for their children. Parents who create partnerships between students, teachers and qualified tutors can ensure a happy and successful school year in spite of budget cuts.
