This content, including Junction View Images, Extended Lanes and Sign-As-Real, enables navigation systems to provide visual displays of upcoming maneuvers to end-users eliminating some of the anxiety experienced driving on Malaysia’s motorways.
In a recent study of Malaysian drivers, NAVTEQ observed that over 50% of them change lanes during a journey and that heavy traffic makes switching lanes difficult. If NAVTEQ customers incorporate NAVTEQ’s Extended Lane product, end-users can see the number of lanes displayed in advance. And when combined with NAVTEQ’s Junction View Image product, the end-user is provided a clearer outlook of the upcoming maneuver with a visual prompt as to which lane the vehicle will need to be in to correctly execute the maneuver.
Another observation from the video study highlighted the level of driver distraction demonstrated while looking for road signage that was obscured due to poor sign maintenance or overgrown foliage. Use of NAVTEQ’s Sign-As-Real product can help eliminate this confusion. A realistic visual display of the sign on the navigation system enables easy recognition of the real situation. NAVTEQ customers can even fade out irrelevant information, providing even more clarity to the end-user.

This production strategy helps NAVTEQ customers quickly and easily move into new geographic regions by reducing application development time.
Beyond this global standardization, NAVTEQ also works with the local officials to obtain all necessary government approvals prior to distribution. The Q2/2010 NAVTEQ map of Malaysia has been approved by Juru Ukur Pemetaan Malaysia (JUPEM) and NAVTEQ will continue to work with JUPEM to obtain approvals for future releases.
