“Devolving the IT decision-making authority to local trusts is good news for patients, taxpayers and the more innovative healthcare providers such as Hytec,” said David Bryant, Hytec’s Managing Director.

“For many health trusts, national initiatives don’t adequately address the needs of their local communities. Giving GPs responsibility for commissioning will mean end-users having greater influence on the systems they adopt, which will enable them to better meet the needs of their patients.

We believe, as more and more clinicians do, that health professionals should have access to social care information and be able to make decisions based on having a complete 360⁰ view of a patient’s care history. This requires the sharing of clinical and social care data that is currently stored in different IT systems.

The review of national programmes and IT contracts will help to open up the market to more innovative solutions that can help trusts to drive efficiency savings and reduce costs. Trusts will now be able to roll up their sleeves and respond much more swiftly and appropriately to the health and social care needs of their local communities.

We will see a more agile approach to innovation where health trusts work in partnership with specialist healthcare ICT suppliers who are directly accountable for the solutions they deliver at a local level. In many cases the systems that clinicians have today are perfectly good – it’s just that they don’t have the infrastructure in place to be able to share information with other clinical and social care systems. We don’t need to completely re-invent the wheel, we just need to connect systems together. We’ve already demonstrated that we have the technologies to do that today.”
