PT. First Media TBK launched a new brand called Sitra WiMAX and became the 1st 4G Wimax operator in Indonesia on Monday, 28th June 2010 Jakarta time.
First Media won a tender held by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology in July 2009 for government bandwidth, securing a license for a 2,3 Gigahertz frequency band in order to develop its WiMAX service. First Media was awarded with 15Mhz within the 2,3 Gigahertz frequency band.
The deployment of Sitra WiMAX would be held in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, Banten area and Northern Sumatra and Aceh area.
For the first time, Wimax (Wireless Interopability for Microwave Access) finally operated commercially in Indonesia. PT First Media became the first operator to provide this services under the name of Sitra Wimax.

He said, formerly, the First Media has been providing services to the cable broadband access via Fastnet. We provide wireless broadband access services that complement its kind to focus on providing high-speed Internet access.
The tariffs themselves are still kept secret but the First Media promises that tariff is not more expensive than cable broadband services today.
Sitra Wimax service will be available in the Greater Jakarta area (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi) from early July 2010. These services will also be extended to the territory of Banten, Aceh and northern Sumatra in the near future. This is according to the license obtained by PT First Media of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology since July 2009.
PT. First Media has invested US$ 50 Million and will keep up investing up to US$ 350 million for this WiMAX deployment project.
“The capital expenditure would be financed by a Rp. 456 billions (US$ 52 million) rights issue and internal cash and bank loans”, stated Hengkie Liwanto; the President Director of PT. First Media TBK. Furthermore, the Chief Marketing Officer of Sitra WiMAX, Jerome Teh stated that the Sitra Wimax intends to focus on providing reliable broadband internet access to the Indonesia public and is optimistic of reaching 1 million subscriber in less than 3 years.
“We have the technology for WiMax. It’s real and it’s here. LTE technology is not mature yet, maybe it will be within three years,” Hengkie said. Budi Setiawan, the Director General for Post and Telecommunications at the Ministry of Communications and Informatics Republic of Indonesia, said that First Media had passed the operational worthiness test to start their operation.
