As telepresence and video conferencing solutions increase in popularity for everyday business communication and vendor systems become more interoperable with SIP and Cisco’s new proprietary standard Telepresence Interoperability Protocol or TIP, it is important for businesses to understand how these systems align with their overall IT infrastructure for optimal management and maintenance.

End User and Endpoint Management: Processor based endpoints like BrightCom’s have the advantage of leveraging existing corporate directories. Corporate LDAP directories can feed into login systems for end users to enter the online meeting interface or administrative console. Password standards and automatic password renewals are also easily updated and managed via the enterprise directory. In traditional MCU and firmware based systems each endpoint device has its own table directory dial list that requires separate upgrading each time conference rooms or users are activated or deactivated. In BrightCom’s client/server architecture, all endpoints automatically register with the server when activated and are added to every other BrightCom endpoint’s dial list in the network. Multiple LDAP directories can also be supported when bridging between multiple company networks. Finally, client/server infrastructure integrated with existing email servers provides advantages for automatic updates to meeting notifications and scheduling.
Physical Hardware: Physical hardware management is also critical to the conferencing infrastructure. Within the client/server software based approach updating the server with enhancements and new features of the server, endpoints and end user interfaces is automatic. Hardware uptime is also manageable with continuous automated backup to the network. In BrightCom’s VCS, administrators can remotely shut down or reboot conference endpoints at specifically scheduled times or spontaneously if necessary.
Clustering conferencing servers together is also important for fault tolerance, load balancing, fail over and least cost routing. In a non server/client environment clustering is not an option. A single MCU is required to handle all of the encoding and decoding as it processes both video and data video streams for all endpoints. In a client/server environment, several servers clustered together can balance the amount of processing for video broadcasts and data presentations.
Security: In business communication, security for video and data content and transport of content is one of the most important areas of IT management. In a client/server infrastructure multiple layers of security are offered. Some of these inclined the ability to require logins for the online meeting interfaces and the administrative console, Transport Layer Security (TSL), Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and standard web encryption schemas to protect the video broadcasts and data presentations over public or private networks.
The ability of the client/server infrastructure to stay current with changing security standards is also a benefit. No touch upgrades of all the telepresence or video conferencing endpoints and web clients makes updating the server easy to manage. In opposition to this, traditional MCU or firmware based endpoints need to be replaced in order to have the most up to date enhancements or features.
Other security issues that can be easily managed with software based infrastructure include role based permissions for document management and content access and modification. Using the client/server architecture can easily allow for adding or removing relationships and roles dictating who can open and share specific documents, images or video clips. With firmware and MCU based conferencing systems, content management and role based security cannot exists since all data is streamed as video through the H.239 protocol.
