Leytonstone, London, United Kingdom, 2010/06/18 - Patients and hospital staff across Forth Valley, Scotland are set to benefit from the introduction of a new speech recognition system, which is already contributing to the process of creating a more efficient and effective service for local people.
Hundreds of clinical staff and medical secretaries working within acute services at NHS Forth Valley are now using MediSpeech, a digital dictation and voice recognition system from G2 Speech. Many are already using digital dictation as part of their everyday work, but a new custom-built interface that links up with the hospitals’ document management system means that speech recognition will soon be part and parcel of daily reporting and documentation across the organisation.
Karen Wilson, Programme Manager responsible for the review of administrative and clerical processes at the NHS Trust said: “As well as improving turnaround times for patient letters, digital dictation and computerised audio files are making the workload more transparent and equitable. As a result, departments are finding it much easier to proactively manage peaks and troughs and ensure our resources match demand.
“We are seeing a change in culture too, with, for example, secretaries volunteering to process outstanding letters for other specialties when they are up to date with their own work. This promotes team spirit and a more sharing approach. There is a lot of change happening with the move to the new Forth Valley Royal Hospital in August 2010 and this is about setting the best possible foundations for the future.”
