CrossComm, Inc. today announced the release of its CrossComm Media Reader™ engine, a platform for quickly deploying pre-existing content onto the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad as a native application. The engine is capable of reading rich text articles, photos, audio clips, and video across the Internet and presenting this data within an organized touch-screen user interface familiar to iPhone OS users. The engine can also be customized to change the look and feel, add new features, or to simply take advantage of Apple’s continual updates to the iPhone OS and feature list.

CrossComm, one of the few firms with an iPhone app in the iTunes App Store on day one, developed the CrossComm Media Reader™ platform in order to launch iPhone and iPod Touch apps for two of NBC Universal’s SyFy properties, Sci Fi Wire and DVICE. The Sci Fi Wire Reader and the DVICE Reader have been widely successful and CrossComm worked with NBC Universal again earlier this year to add a third app, The Caprican. All three apps automatically retrieve and display news, image, and video content from each associated website.

Once Apple announced the release of the iPad, CrossComm began working to build and incorporate new features into the CrossComm Media Reader™ to utilize the iPad’s larger screen and increased memory. The Sci Fi Wire Reader and DVICE Reader now take advantage of these features by displaying enhanced navigation and gesture recognition for quicker access to content, pre-downloading and storing content onto the device so it can be enjoyed later without an internet connection, and displaying photos via a new image gallery.

“The application has been a huge success for both parties. We’ve gotten great feedback on the new features and have been very pleased with consumer feedback,” says Don Shin, CrossComm’s President and CEO. CrossComm is now making the engine available to other companies and organizations looking for an affordable way to get a custom app into the ever-growing iTunes App Store. “Cookie-cutter apps are not the solution - but with the Media Reader engine, companies can build upon that foundation to quickly leverage their existing content while truly taking advantage of the iPhone and iPad’s unique capabilities; it is essentially a head-start so that the real focus can be on customizing the app and taking it to the next level.” said Shin.
