Ulrich Medical Concepts, a leader in developing and implementing seamless electronic medical records (EMR) and physician practice management (PM) systems, was granted a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for methods and systems for electronically maintaining medical records and other patient demographic information in an EMR.

“The issuance of this first patent is a testament to the vision and foresight of our founder, Dr. Dennis Ulrich, still a busy family practice physician in London, Kentucky. He strongly believes in using computer software and technology as a tool to enhance patient care. No one has been a stronger advocate of our software and company than Dr. Ulrich and this patent validates his long held convictions about healthcare and technology.” said Burton Ulrich, Chief Executive Officer of Ulrich Medical Concepts. “When we introduced EMR to the medical community ten years ago, most people didn’t know what EMR was or did; now it is almost a household word.”

The patent, which was originally filed in July 2002, was granted after an eight year rigorous review process by the USPTO. Ulrich Medical Concepts received the Notice of Allowance from the USPTO in December of 2009 and the patent was officially granted on May 11, 2010.

Burton Ulrich, CEO, said that the patent grants UMC intellectual property for the core functionality of EMR and PM systems. “All of our current clients benefit from this patent,” Ulrich said. “It provides further security that the EMR they decided to purchase is protected and recognized by the Federal Government.”

Ulrich Medical Concepts began marketing and implementing its award winning EMR/PM software, Team Chart Concept, to ambulatory physician practices in 1999. The company boasts that it implemented Kentucky’s first “paperless/completely electronic” physician office in Dr. Dennis UIrich’s new practice in London, Kentucky in the same year. Currently, Ulrich Medical Concepts works with medical practices in 12 states across 23 different medical specialties.

“We were able to grow this business through our ongoing commitment to exceed our customers’ expectations of success,” Ulrich said. “By listening to their needs and wants, we developed our EMR solution into a dynamic tool that streamlines their healthcare delivery.”

Ulrich said that the ongoing evolution of Ulrich Medical Concept’s has opened the doors to other markets such as correctional healthcare and medical billing.

“By listening to our customers, we found a need to facilitate a medical billing operation, as well as a very successful correctional-specific EMR company,” Ulrich said. “Both of these companies are built around the core of ideas that are outlined in our patent.”

In 2004, Ulrich Medical Concepts (ulrichmedicalconcepts.com) created CorrecTek, Inc. to deliver EMR to the jail and prison healthcare market. CorrecTek allows correctional medical facilities the ability to reduce their liability against healthcare related law suits, as well as reduce the overall costs of healthcare delivered at their facilities. CorrecTek is nationally recognized as a leader in the correctional EMR market and currently serves jails across the United States.

Revenue Solutions was created as an EMR-based medical billing company to meet the needs of current clients. Revenue Solutions provides EMR to ambulatory physicians while providing the services of a full medical billing firm. The firm allows physicians to gain efficiencies from the EMR while expediting the convoluted medical billing component.

All three companies, Ulrich Medical Concepts, Revenue Solutions and CorrecTek, fall under the Ulrich Medical Family of Companies.

EMR technology gained national exposure in 2009 when it was added as a main component in President Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Currently, the Federal Government has plans to award physicians up to $44,000 (over a five year period) to convert from a paper based medical record system to an EMR solution.
