The National Golf Club in Pinehurst is the host course for the 2010 Junior Memorial Tournament. Played over Memorial Day weekend, the Junior Memorial is presented by the Tarheel Golf Foundation and honors a person or organization each year that contributes to the growth of junior golf in North Carolina. The tournament will be played on Saturday and Sunday, May 29-30 over the only Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course in the Sandhills. The event is open to a select group of players and has a high school and middle school division.
The Tarheel Golf Foundation (tarheelgolf.org) selected National Golf Club and the Sandhills to host this as an alternative to hosting an event on the coast. "There are some fine golf courses at the beach. There's also usually a lot of traffic that players and families must contend with to get there and then they have to fight crowds when going to dinner and to get to the golf course. National Golf Club is centrally located in the Sandhills and actually straddles Pinehurst and Southern Pines. They have luxury accommodations available with a junior Olympic sized pool, fine dining options, tennis and great golf practice facilities. It's one of the best golf courses in North Carolina and has hosted PGA Tour qualifying at least two times," stated Eric Murray of the Tarheel Golf Foundation. "As an alternative to the beach the location is appealing to the entire family for a low stress, opportunity to unwind while their junior golfer competes on a great golf course. It's really no more than a two hour ride from Charlotte or Wilmington and just over an hour from Raleigh and Greensboro. Above all the drove is less stressful than heading to the beach over a busy holiday weekend."
The AJGA thinks that National Golf Club is a great course to challenge the nation's best juniors as well. This summer they will hold the AJGA Golf Pride Junior Classic at National. The Junior Memorial field already has attracted some of the better players in the region, including Grayson Murray, who recently committed to play at Wake Forest.
The Entry fee for the event is only $155. A limited number of accommodation packages, that include weekend membership privileges at National Golf Club are available to players and families. Additional information is available at the Tarheel Golf Foundation website.
