Woodlands, TX, United States, 04/20/2010 - The National Algae Association, algaepreneurs and researchers all believe that algae is one solution to reduce US dependence on foreign oil and to create new jobs today in the US.

Algaepreneurs have already proven that algae can be produced using existing technologies. Algaepreneurs and researchers are in agreement that "we all want to get off of foreign oil" and have joined together in a fast-moving, collaborative, information-sharing effort to create this new industry. Although research will continue, algaepreneurs are taking the steps to build commercial-scale algae production facilities.
National Algae Association's efforts to move the algae industry out of the laboratories and into commercial-scale production are paying off. So far, NAA has formed a Buyers’ Consortium to help reduce costs, an Engineering Consortium to identify and resolve previously unknown scale-up issues, has implemented the donation of components and equipment for a commercial-scale demo PBR at Lone Star College in Montgomery County, Texas, and is hosting the first Algae Production Certification Program in the United States. Each conference and workshop brings algae producers, researchers, equipment manufacturers and potential investors together for intensive sharing of information and progress.
The preliminary agenda for NAA’s next conference, April 29-30, 2010 at the Doubletree Hotel Houston Intercontinental, includes the following:
Leif Johnson/Technology Catalyst – Free Range Algae
Richard M. Carlton, M.D./CST Growth LLC - PPFM bacteria increase cell density of algae and their oil concentration
Dr. Kyle Murray/University of Texas San Antonio - Upscaling a Microalgae Growth System and Assessing Biomass Production, Lipid Production, Nutrient and Carbon Removal
Dr. Barbara Benson/University of Louisiana-Lafayette - Lighting
John Bhatt/Novasep - purification and separation techniques of algae and cellulose
Dr. Maria Anez-Lingerfelt/Pall Corporation - DeWatering

Bruce Badeau – Algaenomics, Financial Modeling.
In addition, to the conference on April 29-30, the NAA is conducting the first Algae Production Certification Program in the US, on April 27-28 at the Doubletree Hotel Houston Intercontinental Airport. Education and training are keys to this new industry. Algaepreneurs from the US and around the world will have the opportunity to learn all aspects of algae production - from strain selection through growing, harvesting, extraction, along with financial models/economics, for biocrude oil and co-products for the nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, organic fertilizer and bio-plastic industries.
