For those who want to know more about the music industry or get tips from industry professionals on how to better produce their own music, distribute and promote it, the 3rd annual Vancouver Island Music Business Conference (VIMBC) is a four day event being held June 24th to June 27th in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island.
A diverse group of regional, national and international music industry panelists will be presenting information in various workshops throughout the event covering topics such as songwriting, music publishing, production, marketing and promotion, legal issues affecting musicians, and funding resources. Delegate passes are available online which give the participants access to workshops, performances, and socializing events including a concert by Chilliwack. Executive delegate passes are also available and include a round of golf at the Crown Isle Golf Resort as well as exclusive networking opportunities.
The music industry has changed dramatically over the past decade as new technologies provide unprecedented access to explore the fields of music production, collaborative projects, music distribution, marketing, and industry networking. Although the above is true, the benefit of face-to-face networking, live performance, and forums to discuss common challenges is as important to building a successful career as it ever has been. The conference provides all the benefits of attending larger conferences such as Canadian Music Week or Music West, but given VIMBC’s smaller scale it affords those who attend a more personal experience and a greater opportunity to interact and benefit from those networking opportunities.
This years’ 25+ panelists include songwriters Grammy award winner Dan Hill, Bill Henderson of Chilliwack, and Ron Irving; recording artists Patricia Conroy, Jamie Warren, and Sue Medley; publishers Larry Wayne Clark, Sue Irving, and Steven McClintock, as well as music lawyers, booking agents, promoters, and directors from Music BC and FACTOR. Many of the panelists have multi-faceted expertise representing a variety of musical genres, which you can learn more about by visiting the conference website.
One of the scheduled workshops will be looking at the process of music production, and various techniques that can be used to create different sounds. Panelist Kevin Churko is a music producer and engineer who has worked on projects with Shania Twain, Ozzy Osbourne, Ringo Starr, Britney Spears, and The Corrs. Adding to the discussion will be producers Bob Funk Doug Romanow and Brian Howes who as worked with Avril Lavigne, Puddle of Mudd, Hedley, and Daughtry.
Most of the workshop conference events will take place at the Sid Williams Theatre, in Courtenay, BC, including a performance by Grammy award winning songwriter Dan Hill. One of the more exciting aspects of any music conference is the opportunity for musicians to showcase their own music. VIMBC will incorporate various local venues for showcasing acts that will perform for panelists within a local audience. “This event has tremendous potential…as an affordable regional conference it will be beneficial to the professional development of emerging artists in Western Canada,” says event sponsor Deborah Renz. Showcasing opportunities for the conference are available for a limited time and can be applied for online.
The Comox Valley on Vancouver Island (vimbc.com) is easily accessible either by car via BC Ferries or by air via local airport YQQ and boasts both a natural beauty and cultural richness. To register for VIMBC, visit their website.
