About 12 years ago, Cooke Real Estate School started broadcasting the pre-license sales course live on the Cooke Real Estate School website. This was before u tube and streaming video came into reality in the market place. As the owner of Cooke Real Estate School, Frank Cooke states: "I thought it was a great idea, but it was difficult to get students familiar with viewing the course due to the fact that most students either had dial up connections, or they were just unfamiliar with streaming video."

In 2002 the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) launched the "OpenCourseWare" proof-of-concept pilot site, and opened it to the public, offering 32 courses. In September 2003, MIT OpenCourseWare published its 500 th course, including some courses with complete streaming video lectures. By September 2004, 900 MIT courses were available online.
