Toronto Google has set its eyes on mobile and wireless communications, and its new strategy to “put a cloud in the hands of a cell phone user” will disrupt the telecom and media industry in a drastic way, according to a newly released report by Red Mobile Co.
Google already sees more search performed using handsets than PCs in developing countries. Since the launch of its Android platform, over two dozen device manufacturers have committed to it. Shipments of Android phones exceed 60,000 devices a day and have doubled over the last quarter (at the time of writing of this report). Google announced a $750 M acquisition of Admob to further diversify its mobile search portfolio; so when Google’s CEO, Eric Schmidt, asks the question “What next?” the answer is likely to be “To revolutionize the industry”, says Dawood Khan, Partner at Redmobile Co, a Management Consulting & Market Research firm specializing in Wireless, Cloud Computing, and Web 2.0 technologies.

Leveraging advances in smartphone capabilities and the power of cloud computing, Google plans to make the mobile internet transparent to language barriers via semantic web search supporting voice and visual recognition technologies. Add to this the power of an OS platform tightly integrated with the device, a well tuned search and advertizing capability, and you get a very powerful value proposition for consumers, says Mr. Khan.
