The Ameda Elite Hospital Grade Breast Pump was recently proven to outperform other leading hospital breast pumps, in research conducted in neonatal intensive care units (NICU’s) across the United States

Mothers of newborns must establish a healthy supply of breast milk while their child is in the NICU in order to provide proper nutrition in the critical first 2 weeks of the child’s life. Because mothers are not able to directly breastfeed NICU newborns, breast pumps are often used to stimulate the milk supply, and provide vital nutrition to the child.

Lactation research shows that during the first 10 to 14 days post partum, a mother’s body is primed and ready to produce milk. It is during this time that doctors and lactation consultants recommend developing a good, steady supply of breast milk in order to provide the recommended level of breast milk for their child. Doctors & lactation consultants agree that pre-term infants need at the very least 500mL/day of expressed breast milk to meet their nutritional needs, but recommend as much as 750mL/day. Because of this need, mothers of NICU newborns must establish their milk supply by mimicking their child’s nursing with a breast pump.

Through research of various NICU’s throughout the United States on post partum women, it has been found that Ameda’s Elite Hospital Grade Breast Pump was the most successful pump, with regard to establishing a steady supply of breast milk. The Ameda Elite was compared against other leading hospital grade breast pumps, including the Medela Symphony, as well as normal breastfeeding mothers. On average the Ameda Elite was able to establish the minimum (500mL/day) amount of milk in just 4 days, while achieving optimal level (750mL/day) in just 9 days of use, beating out the other hospital grade pumps, as well as normal breastfeeding moms.

The use of breast pumps for increasing milk supply is of vital importance for pre-term infants. According to the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology & Nutrition, when breastfeeding goes smoothly, nothing could be simpler. But when a NICU baby can’t breastfeed, pumping becomes the key to both the baby’s health and to extending breastfeeding duration, which has been proven to have cognitive, as well as health benefits later in life.

Ameda (amedadirect.com), a leading manufacturer of breast pumps and breastfeeding supplies, produces a variety of personal-use and hospital grade breast pumps, including the Ameda Elite. To learn more about the Ameda Elite, and the other pumps Ameda offers, visit the website.
